What is A/B Testing?

A/B testing (also called split testing) is a method of comparing two versions of a webpage or element to see which one performs better. Visitors are randomly split between version A (the control) and version B (the variation), and conversion data determines the winner.

A/B testing removes the guesswork from web design decisions. Instead of debating which headline is better or whether the button should be red or green, you run both versions simultaneously and let visitor behavior decide.

In a standard A/B test, 50% of visitors see the original version (control) and 50% see the changed version (variation). The test runs until enough conversions are collected to determine, with statistical confidence, whether the difference in conversion rate is genuine or random noise. Most A/B testing tools (Google Optimize, VWO, Convert, Optimizely) handle this calculation automatically.

The highest-impact elements to test on a service website are: the main headline (often produces 10–30% conversion lifts when improved), the CTA button text and placement, the hero section layout, form length and field ordering, and the placement and framing of social proof.

A common mistake is testing too many things at once. If you change the headline, the button color, the form, and the hero image simultaneously, you cannot know which change caused the result. Effective A/B tests isolate one variable per test.

A/B testing requires sufficient traffic to reach statistical significance. If a page receives 50 visitors per month, it will take many months to accumulate enough data for a reliable result. Most A/B testing becomes meaningful at 200+ unique visitors per variation per month, with at least 20–30 conversions per variation to measure.

The value of A/B testing compounds over time. Each winning test improves your baseline conversion rate, and subsequent tests build on that improved baseline. A site that has run 20 sequential A/B tests will significantly outconvert one that has never been tested.
