What is Backlink?

A backlink is a link from one website to another. Backlinks are one of Google's most important ranking signals, when reputable sites link to your pages, it signals to Google that your content is credible and worth ranking. Quality matters far more than quantity.
Google was built on the insight that a link from one website to another is essentially a vote of confidence. If 50 reputable websites link to your page about coaching website design, Google interprets that as evidence that your page is a credible resource on that topic, and ranks it accordingly.
This is still true, but the nuance has grown considerably since Google's early days. The quality of linking sites matters more than quantity. One link from a domain-authority-100 publication like Forbes or a reputable industry association is worth more than 500 links from low-quality directories. Relevance matters too, a link from a related industry site signals more than a link from an unrelated site.
For small businesses, the most practical backlink strategy focuses on earning links from local sources (local news coverage, chamber of commerce listings, local business directories), industry sources (professional associations, relevant directories, guest posts on industry blogs), and by creating content that other sites want to link to (original data, useful tools, comprehensive guides).
Manipulative link building, buying links, participating in link schemes, or building large volumes of links from low-quality sites, can result in Google penalties that are extremely difficult to recover from. The modern backlink strategy is about earning links through genuine quality rather than artificially manufacturing them.
For most small businesses, backlinks are the off-page SEO factor they have the least direct control over. Technical SEO and on-page SEO can be improved immediately by optimizing your own site. Backlinks require external sites to take action. This is why it is most efficient to focus on technical and on-page SEO first, then pursue backlinks through content and outreach.
Domain authority (a metric from Moz) and domain rating (a metric from Ahrefs) are tools used to estimate the relative strength of a site's backlink profile, though they are third-party approximations rather than official Google metrics.
