What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console (GSC) is the most direct window into how Google sees your website. It is free, data comes directly from Google, and it shows information you cannot get anywhere else.

The key reports in Search Console include: the Performance report (which search queries bring visitors to your site, how many impressions and clicks each page gets, your average position in search results), the Coverage report (which pages are indexed, which have errors, which are excluded and why), the Core Web Vitals report (your site's speed scores by device), and the Sitemaps report (whether Google has successfully crawled your submitted sitemap).

For small businesses, the Performance report is particularly valuable for understanding what keywords are already bringing in traffic and what keywords you are appearing for but not yet ranking well for. Pages that have high impressions but low click-through rates are candidates for meta description improvements. Pages with average positions of 8–15 are on the edge of page one, content improvements can push them to top-5 positions.

The Coverage report tells you which pages have indexing errors, if important service pages are not indexed, they cannot rank, and Search Console shows exactly why they failed to index.

Setting up Search Console takes about 10 minutes: verify ownership of your domain (typically by adding a DNS record or a meta tag), submit your sitemap, and within a few days Google will begin populating your reports.

Most small business websites should be checking Search Console monthly at minimum. The queries report alone, showing exactly what searches are bringing people to your site, is worth more for content strategy than any keyword research tool.
