GLOSSARYTITLE TAG

What is Title Tag?

SHORT ANSWER

A title tag is the HTML element that specifies the title of a webpage. It appears as the clickable headline in search engine results and as the tab label in browsers. Title tags are one of the most important on-page SEO elements, they tell Google what a page is about.

The title tag is the most visible SEO element on any page. It appears as the blue clickable headline in Google search results, as the tab title in browsers, and when pages are shared on social media.

From an SEO standpoint, the title tag is one of the strongest signals Google uses to understand what a page is about. Pages that include their target keyword in the title tag consistently outrank pages that do not, all else being equal. The keyword should appear early in the title, "Web Designer for Real Estate Agents | FabBuilds" is stronger than "FabBuilds | Web Designer for Real Estate Agents" because Google weights words near the beginning more heavily.

The practical guidelines for title tags: keep them under 60 characters to avoid truncation in search results, include the primary keyword for the page, make the title compelling and specific rather than generic, and include your brand name at the end if space permits.

Every page on a site should have a unique title tag. Duplicate title tags tell Google that multiple pages have the same content, which dilutes the authority of each one and can result in ranking drops for both.

Common title tag mistakes include using the same title on multiple pages, writing titles that are too vague ("Home" or "About Us"), exceeding 60 characters so the title truncates awkwardly in search results, and failing to include the geographic target for local service pages (a therapist in Chicago should have "Therapist in Chicago" in their title tag, not just "Licensed Therapist").

Title tags are one of the first things a website audit should check, fixing missing or duplicate titles is often the single quickest SEO win available on a neglected site.
