What is Discovery Call?
SHORT ANSWER
A discovery call is an initial conversation between a potential client and a service provider to determine whether they are a good fit for each other. In web design, it typically covers the client's business goals, current website situation, project scope, timeline, and budget.
A discovery call serves two purposes: it helps the client understand what to expect from the designer, and it helps the designer understand enough about the client's situation to provide an accurate scope and price.
For web design projects, a discovery call typically lasts 15–30 minutes and covers: what the business does and who it serves, the primary goal of the new or redesigned website (more leads, better brand presence, specific integrations), what is currently working or not working on the existing site, the timeline the client is working with, and their approximate budget range.
The discovery call is not a pitch or a sales presentation. The designer's job is to listen, ask clarifying questions, and honestly assess whether they can help. Sometimes the answer is no, the budget does not match the scope, the timeline is unrealistic, or the client needs something outside the designer's specialty. Honesty at the discovery stage prevents bad projects for both parties.
From the client's perspective, a discovery call is an opportunity to evaluate whether the designer asks good questions (indicating they understand the business, not just the technical work), communicates clearly, and seems like someone they could work with for the duration of a project.
Many web designers offer free 15-minute discovery calls to lower the barrier to initial contact. This reduces the friction of reaching out for a potential client who is still deciding whether to proceed. A free call with no obligation signals confidence and removes the fear of a high-pressure sales conversation.
Following a discovery call, the designer typically prepares a written scope, a document outlining exactly what will be built, what is not included, the timeline, and the price. This scope becomes the basis of the contract.
