GLOSSARYWIREFRAME

What is Wireframe?

SHORT ANSWER

A wireframe is a simplified, black-and-white sketch of a webpage layout that shows the placement of elements, headings, images, buttons, navigation, without visual design or content. It is used in web design to plan structure and user flow before any visual work begins.

Wireframes are the blueprints of a website. They map out where every element lives on a page, the header, the hero section, the navigation links, the content blocks, the call-to-action buttons, without any color, typography, or actual content. The goal is to make structural decisions quickly and cheaply, before investing time in visual design.

Building a wireframe first solves a common web design problem: clients and designers spend time debating colors and fonts when the real issues are structural, is the most important information visible first? Does the call-to-action appear in the right place? Is the navigation clear? Wireframes force these questions to be answered before they become expensive to change.

Wireframes exist on a spectrum from low-fidelity (hand-sketched boxes on paper) to high-fidelity (detailed digital mockups with placeholder text and exact spacing). Low-fidelity wireframes are faster to produce and easier to change. High-fidelity wireframes communicate more precisely to developers who will build from them.

Common wireframing tools include Figma, Balsamiq, and Adobe XD. For most small business web projects, a mid-fidelity wireframe in Figma is sufficient, detailed enough to show intent, fast enough to revise.

For clients, reviewing a wireframe is much more productive than reviewing a half-finished visual design. It is easier to say "the CTA should be above the testimonials" when you are looking at labeled boxes than when you are looking at a polished design and trying to articulate a structural concern.

The wireframing phase typically happens after the strategy and scope discussions, and before visual design begins. It is one of the steps that separates experienced web designers from those who jump straight to "making it look pretty."
