What is Call to Action (CTA)?

A call to action (CTA) is a button, link, or phrase on a webpage that directs visitors to take a specific next step, such as "Book a Free Call," "Get a Quote," or "Start Your Project." It is the most important element on any conversion-focused page.

A call to action tells visitors exactly what to do next. Without a clear CTA, visitors read your content and then leave because they do not know what step to take. The CTA removes that ambiguity.

Effective CTAs share a few characteristics. They are specific, "Book a Free 15-Minute Call" outperforms "Contact Us" because it tells visitors exactly what happens when they click. They create urgency or reduce risk, "Get Your Free Audit" lowers the barrier compared to "Hire Us." And they are visually distinct, a CTA button should contrast with the background, be large enough to click on mobile, and appear in multiple places on longer pages.

Most small business websites underuse their CTAs in two ways: they have only one CTA at the very bottom of the page (most visitors never scroll that far), and the CTA they do have is generic and passive.

Primary CTAs are the main action you want most visitors to take, usually book a call, fill out a form, or pay a deposit. Secondary CTAs give hesitant visitors a lower-stakes next step, "See our work first" or "Get a free audit." Having both primary and secondary CTAs on the same page captures more of the visitor spectrum.

CTA placement matters significantly. Above-the-fold placement captures engaged visitors immediately. Mid-page placement captures those still reading. Bottom-of-page placement closes readers who consumed all the content. High-converting service pages typically have all three.

The copy on a CTA button should describe the action and hint at the outcome. "Start My Website" is stronger than "Submit." "See Pricing" is stronger than "Learn More." One word changes can move conversion rates meaningfully.
