GLOSSARYABOVE THE FOLD

What is Above the Fold?

SHORT ANSWER

Above the fold refers to the portion of a webpage that is visible without scrolling. It comes from newspaper printing, where the most important stories appeared on the top half of the folded front page. In web design, it is the most valuable real estate on any page.

The term "above the fold" originates from print journalism. A folded newspaper shows only its top half on the newsstand, the stories placed there get more readers. Web design borrowed the concept: the content visible in the browser before a user scrolls is the most-seen content on the page.

On a typical desktop browser, above the fold is roughly the first 600–700 pixels of vertical space. On mobile, it is shorter, around 400–500 pixels. Since more than 60% of small business website traffic comes from mobile devices, designing for mobile above-the-fold is more important than desktop.

The content you place above the fold determines whether visitors stay or leave. Research consistently shows that users form their first impression of a website within 50 milliseconds. The information above the fold needs to answer three questions immediately: What is this? Who is it for? What should I do next?

For a service business, the ideal above-the-fold section includes: a headline that names your service and its outcome, a one-sentence description of who you serve, a clear call-to-action button, and a trust signal (a testimonial, a client count, a credential).

Common mistakes in above-the-fold design include: a hero image that looks impressive but says nothing, a generic tagline like "We help businesses grow," and hiding the call-to-action below the fold entirely. Visitors should never have to scroll to find out what you do or how to contact you.

A/B testing above-the-fold elements, specifically the headline and CTA button, almost always produces the highest conversion lift of any optimization work on a page.
