What is Bounce Rate?

Bounce rate measures single-page sessions, when a visitor lands on your site, looks around, and leaves without clicking anything. Google Analytics tracks this as a percentage of all sessions.

A "good" bounce rate varies by industry and page type. Blog posts typically have bounce rates of 70–90% because readers consume the content and leave, that is the expected behavior. Service pages and homepages should aim for 40–60%. Landing pages with a single CTA should be 30–50%.

The most common causes of high bounce rate on small business websites are slow load time (every second of load time increases bounce rate by roughly 7%), a headline that does not match the visitor's expectation, a design that looks unprofessional or untrustworthy, and content that does not quickly answer "is this for me?"
