GLOSSARY → PAGE SPEED
What is Page Speed?
SHORT ANSWER
Page speed is the time it takes for a webpage to fully load and become interactive for a visitor. Google uses page speed as a ranking factor, and research shows that every additional second of load time reduces conversions by approximately 7% and increases bounce rate by 11%.
Page speed is measured in several ways: time to first byte (how quickly the server starts responding), first contentful paint (when the first visual element appears), largest contentful paint (when the main content is visible), and time to interactive (when the page fully responds to clicks and input).
Google's Core Web Vitals, a set of speed and user experience metrics, became an official ranking factor in 2021. Sites that score poorly on these metrics are systematically outranked by faster competitors in Google search results, all else being equal.
For small businesses, page speed is often the most overlooked ranking factor. A local plumber or coach might have excellent reviews, strong copy, and good keywords, but if their site takes 6 seconds to load on mobile, Google will rank a faster competitor above them in local search results.
DIY website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy have notoriously slow mobile performance because they load heavy JavaScript frameworks, unnecessary plugins, and large unoptimized images to power their drag-and-drop editors. These scores are largely structural, no amount of optimizing content will fix a platform that is architecturally slow.
Custom-coded sites built with modern frameworks like Next.js can be architected specifically for speed from the ground up: static HTML pre-rendering, automatic image optimization, minimal JavaScript, and edge CDN delivery. This is why well-built custom sites consistently score 90+ on Google's speed test while template-based platforms typically score 35–65.
The business impact is direct: a faster site ranks higher, holds visitor attention longer, and converts at a higher rate. For a service business getting 500 visits per month, improving load time from 4 seconds to 1.5 seconds can realistically add 3–5 new leads per month from the same traffic.
