GLOSSARY → MOBILE-FIRST DESIGN
What is Mobile-First Design?
SHORT ANSWER
Mobile-first design is an approach to web design where the mobile version of a site is built and optimized first, and the desktop version is treated as an enhancement. Since over 60% of small business website traffic comes from phones, Google indexes the mobile version of your site first.
Mobile-first design flips the traditional web design process. Instead of building a desktop layout and then "making it work on mobile," designers start with the smallest screen and work upward. The result is a site that feels native and intentional on phones, not an afterthought.
Google's mobile-first indexing means Google crawls and evaluates the mobile version of your website when determining search rankings, not the desktop version. If your mobile site is a degraded version of your desktop site, your rankings reflect that.
More than 60% of searches now happen on mobile devices. For local businesses, restaurants, coaches, service providers, real estate agents, that number is often higher. If someone searches "therapist near me" from their phone and your site loads slowly, has tiny text, overlapping elements, or a broken booking form on mobile, they will leave and click the next result.
Mobile-first design addresses this at every level: font sizes are readable without zooming (minimum 16px body text), tap targets are large enough to press accurately with a thumb (minimum 44×44 pixels), images resize intelligently without overflow, forms work without a keyboard covering important elements, and the most important information appears near the top of the page where mobile users are most likely to see it.
Testing mobile performance goes beyond resizing a browser window. Real device testing, Google's PageSpeed Insights mobile score, and Core Web Vitals data in Google Search Console give accurate pictures of the mobile experience.
A well-built mobile-first site does not require separate mobile and desktop codebases, responsive design using CSS handles both from a single codebase, with the mobile layout as the default and desktop layout added as an enhancement.
