GLOSSARYWEB HOSTING

What is Web Hosting?

SHORT ANSWER

Web hosting is the service that stores your website files on a server and makes them accessible to visitors via the internet. The quality of hosting directly affects your site's speed, uptime, security, and ultimately its Google rankings.

When someone visits your website, their browser makes a request to a server that stores your site's files. Web hosting is the service that provides that server infrastructure. Without hosting, your website does not exist on the internet.

Hosting types range from shared hosting (cheapest, where hundreds of sites share one server, slow, unreliable) to VPS hosting (a virtual private server, more resources, better performance) to dedicated servers (a physical server used only by you, expensive, for high-traffic sites) to cloud and edge hosting (distributed infrastructure that serves content from data centers worldwide, fast, scalable).

For small business websites in 2025, the best combination of performance and cost is typically a managed cloud hosting platform like Vercel or Netlify for static and server-side rendered sites. These platforms serve content from global CDN (content delivery network) infrastructure, meaning visitors get your site from a server geographically close to them regardless of where your origin server is. The result is consistently fast load times globally.

Traditional shared hosting, GoDaddy, Bluehost, HostGator, remains common for WordPress sites but delivers significantly worse performance than modern cloud platforms. Server response times on shared hosts are often 600–1,200ms before any content loads. On Vercel or Netlify, server response times are typically 50–200ms.

Hosting cost is often misunderstood as the primary factor in choosing a provider. The more important factors are: server response time (directly affects page speed and rankings), uptime reliability (downtime means missed visitors), ease of deployment (how easily can updates be pushed), and scalability (can the hosting handle traffic spikes without crashing).

A custom-coded site deployed on Vercel runs on free hosting for most small business traffic levels. Sites on Vercel's free tier serve up to 100GB of bandwidth per month, sufficient for a site receiving thousands of monthly visitors.
