GLOSSARY → SALES FUNNEL
What is Sales Funnel?
SHORT ANSWER
A sales funnel is the sequence of steps a potential customer moves through from first awareness of your business to making a purchase or booking. In web design, a funnel typically includes landing pages, lead capture forms, email sequences, and booking or payment flows.
The term "funnel" comes from its shape: a wide top (many people become aware of your business) narrowing to a smaller bottom (fewer people convert to paying clients). The goal of funnel design is to maximize how many people move through each stage and reach the bottom.
For a service business, the funnel typically looks like this: a potential client discovers you through Google, social media, or a referral (awareness stage). They visit your website and read about your offer (consideration stage). They fill out a contact form, book a call, or pay a deposit (decision stage). After the project, they become a potential source of referrals and repeat business (retention stage).
A website is not a funnel by default, it is the container that a funnel runs through. The funnel is the deliberate sequence of steps, content, and conversion actions designed to move visitors from awareness to becoming clients.
Funnel optimization focuses on the transition points where people drop off. If 1,000 people visit your services page and only 10 fill out the contact form, the problem is at the consideration-to-decision transition. Common causes include unclear pricing, a lack of social proof near the CTA, a form that asks for too much too soon, or copy that focuses on features rather than outcomes the client cares about.
Automated email sequences extend the funnel beyond the website. When someone fills out a form or books a call, they enter an email sequence that builds trust, answers common questions, and keeps your business top of mind until they are ready to move forward. This captures leads that were not ready to buy immediately, a segment most businesses completely ignore.
