GLOSSARYWHITE LABEL WEB DESIGN

What is White Label Web Design?

SHORT ANSWER

White label web design is when one agency or designer builds websites that are then sold or presented under another agency's brand name. The end client does not know who actually built the site. It is commonly used by marketing agencies, PR firms, or consultancies that want to offer web design without building an in-house team.

In a white label arrangement, the building agency (the subcontractor) delivers work that the selling agency (the reseller) presents as their own. The end client's contract and relationship is with the reseller, and the actual builder remains invisible.

Marketing agencies often use white label web design to offer web services without maintaining an in-house development team. A social media or advertising agency may have many clients who ask about websites, rather than turning those clients away or hiring developers, they partner with a white label design partner and mark up the work.

From the end client's perspective, there is no visible difference, they receive a professional website, manage the relationship with one agency, and pay one company. The subcontracting arrangement is a business decision that affects the agencies involved, not the client's experience.

For small businesses seeking a web designer, white label arrangements are common and not inherently problematic, what matters is the quality of the final product and the accountability of the agency they are working with directly. However, white labeling can create issues if the selling agency does not have sufficient technical knowledge to communicate between the client and the builder accurately, resulting in misunderstood requirements and revision cycles.

White label pricing typically involves the subcontracting agency charging the reseller at a discounted rate (often 30–50% below what they would charge directly), and the reseller marking up the work to their client. The difference accounts for the reseller's client relationship management, sales overhead, and profit margin.
