What is Google Business Profile?

SHORT ANSWER

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free tool that lets businesses manage how they appear in Google Search and Google Maps. A complete, optimized profile is the single most important local SEO asset for service businesses that operate in a specific geographic area.

Google Business Profile (GBP) is how your business appears in the Google Maps results and the local "3-pack", the three businesses shown prominently at the top of local search results. For service businesses, appearing in this pack can be more valuable than any other ranking.

A complete GBP includes: accurate business name, address, and phone number; business category and subcategories; hours of operation; website link; photos of your business, team, and work; a description of your services; service area definitions (for service-area businesses that do not serve clients at a physical location); and active management of the Q&A section.

Reviews are the most important ranking factor within Google Business Profile. Businesses with more recent, higher-quality reviews consistently outrank those with fewer or lower ratings in local pack results. Actively requesting reviews from satisfied clients, through a direct link sent after a project completion, is the most straightforward local SEO tactic available.

Regularly posting updates to your GBP (similar to social media posts, but appearing in your business profile) signals to Google that the profile is actively maintained and increases profile visibility. Photos also boost engagement, profiles with photos receive significantly more clicks and calls than those without.

Google Business Profile is completely free. There is no paid tier for appearing in organic local search results, which makes it one of the highest-ROI marketing tools available to small businesses. The cost is time: setting up the profile correctly, generating reviews consistently, and keeping information updated.

Verifying ownership of your profile (through a postcard, phone call, or video verification) is a prerequisite for managing it. If a business does not claim its own profile, a competitor or an incorrect auto-generated listing may be what appears when people search for you.
