GLOSSARYNAP CONSISTENCY

What is NAP Consistency?

SHORT ANSWER

NAP consistency refers to having your business Name, Address, and Phone number listed identically across all online directories, platforms, and your website. Inconsistent NAP information confuses Google and weakens local SEO rankings.

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone, the three core pieces of business identity information that appear across online directories, social profiles, Google Business Profile, your website, and dozens of data aggregators.

Google uses NAP data to verify that your business is real and to understand its geographic presence. When the same business is listed with different variations of its name, address, or phone number across different platforms, it creates ambiguity. Google resolves ambiguity by being conservative, it reduces confidence in your local ranking signals when the information does not all point to the same thing clearly.

Common NAP inconsistencies include: using "St." on some listings and "Street" on others, listing a suite number on some platforms but not others, using a different phone number (like a tracking number) on one directory that does not match the rest, and using slight variations of the business name (with and without "LLC," with different abbreviations, with and without a geographic modifier).

The fix requires auditing your current NAP across the major platforms: Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook Business Page, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and industry-specific directories relevant to your business. Any inconsistencies should be corrected to match a single "master" version of your NAP, whatever format appears on your official website.

NAP should be marked up with LocalBusiness schema on your website, matching the exact format used on your Google Business Profile. It should also appear in text format on your website (not just in an image), so search engines can read it.

For local businesses, NAP consistency is a foundational local SEO task. It does not require sophisticated SEO expertise, but it does require systematic auditing and correction across many platforms, something that is easy to neglect because the results of fixing it are not immediately visible.
