What is Local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of optimizing a website and online presence to appear in search results for geographically specific queries, like "dentist in Austin" or "real estate agent near me." It is the primary SEO strategy for service businesses that serve clients in a specific city or region.
Local SEO matters because most small business clients find services by searching locally. Someone looking for a therapist does not search "therapist", they search "therapist in [their city]" or "therapist near me." Ranking for those localized searches is what drives real client inquiries.

NAP consistency, ensuring your business Name, Address, and Phone number are identical everywhere they appear online (your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories), sends consistent geographic signals to Google and avoids confusion about your location.
For small businesses, local SEO typically delivers results faster than broad SEO because local competition is lower. Ranking on the first page for "[city] + [service]" is achievable for most small businesses within 3–6 months of technical and content optimization. The economic value of a first-page local ranking, in a city where clients are searching for your service weekly, is substantial and compounds over time.
